Short Story Contest

We wish to thank all those who submitted for their support of our fund raising effort.  As mentioned there are three paid prizes with a first prize award of $1,000.

Halifax EMS will be compiling the top stories into a publication. This will be available through Barnes and Noble and Amazon by summer. We will also have the same material available for purchase as an electronic book (PDF) on our website.

 First Place

Ray Walker with “A Comfortable Silence”.

Ray told a story of two fire chiefs in neighboring towns who found a means to reconcile the bonds of brotherhood they lost on one horrible night. The story focuses on the small details of operating a service in a tiny town – budgets, personalities, and the ghosts that haunt us all.

 Second Place

Tavi Black “South Philly 1960”

Tavi’s story is a bit darker Ray’s story. It touches on death, a topic present in just about every submission. Like Ray, Tavi found her story in the business of life, looking at the challenges of getting through a day.

 Third Place

Joshua Keil, “Man Down”

Josh’s well-written story was one of the numerous stories submitted that examined the pace and drama of EMS.

 Honorable Mention

Deborah Lieberson “Price of Admission”

Deborah explores the frustration and expertise that the very sick have with the people and routines of the medical field. The exploration is punctuated with humor and tenderness.

Congratulations!!!

What is our goal

We are a rapid response medical team of trained and licensed volunteers. We have oxygen, medical equipment, and a few essential tools. We provide care to our neighbors after a call has been placed to 911 and before the ambulance arrives on scene. We are on-duty every day, every night -- Dial 911 in case of any emergency.

Our regular meetings are the Fourth Monday of each Month at the Halifax Fire Company, 118 Branch Rd, Halifax, Vermont. Meetings start at 1900h (7pm).
